The Friendship of Hedgehogs

What is the cause of ill feelings in human beings? Why people are angry, sad, remorseful, irritated, frustrated, or depressed? Buddhist doctrine discusses this question. It says that the largest problem in human beings' lives is based in human relationships. Buddha once said that human beings were destined to be born alone and to die alone. Some would come; some other would go. Lives are transient. Human beings are lonely. Everybody is suffering from loneliness. Readers might have heard the Buddhist concept of approaching the world based on a view of life as something transient and empty.

Buddhist monks are like Christian clergymen; they both speak of life through profound but understandable analogies. One Buddhist monk said that human relationships are like a hedgehog's friendship. Hedgehogs have thousands of needles on their backs in order to protect themselves. However, other animals do not want to make friends with hedgehogs because they did not want to be hurt by the needles on hedgehogs' backs. Hedgehogs are, therefore, lonely. A hedgehog may try to be a friend of another hedgehog. A hedgehog would be extremely happy to find another hedgehog; the hedgehogs would hope to become friends and cure each other's loneliness.

If the hedgehogs kept their distance from each other, their needles would not do any damage. However, as the hedgehogs became friendlier, they would become closer in their physical relationship. When they started to be physically close, they would start to hurt each other with their own needles.

The monk explained that human relationships are highly similar to the story of the hedgehogs. When two persons keep a distance from each other and respect other, they seemed to have fewer problems. When they became close and intimate, their needles would start to cause them to hurt each other. When they were separated, they would be longing for love. When they were close again, they would hurt each other again, and once they were hurt, they would be separated and lonely again. Buddhism calls this vicious cycle "Loneliness Hell", and it can happen to anybody.

Even if one is busy and surrounded by many people (such as so-called friends, office colleagues, or family members), one can still be lonely if he feels that nobody knows real him. It is similar to living in a big city. There are many people around him, but there is no one who talks with him or even knows him. One would be, therefore, angry, sad, remorseful, irritated, frustrated, or depressed. Buddhism teaches that it is only unconditional love and spiritual awakening which can save human beings from this miserable cycle. If one separated himself from selfishness and gladly helped others without seeking anything in return, he would be free from loneliness; therefore, he would not suffer from these ill feelings.

Even without awakening spiritually, someone who would build his soul, knowing that unconditional love is the solution to loneliness, would be able to acquire an unusually strong mind free from negative emotions.

Principle of GSSG

GSSG is an acronym of general - specific - specific - general. It is a general principle of studying or learning new technology or knowledge. Have you ever listened to a professional explanation so boring that you feel sleepy? For example, you needed to learn a foreign language and went to a language school, where you first received a general lecture. They talked about the history of the language, how it was developed, and how it developed into its present structure. You would start to feel sleepy within five minutes. In contrast, you might have come across someone who could explain highly technical matters, generally boring issues, that kept your interest for the entire presentation.

In school, we all had our favorite teachers and those we did not like much. There were popular teachers and not so popular teachers. What was the difference? It makes a large difference in the power or degree of persuasion if one applies simple analysis to his understanding and how he constructs his explanation of logic. I call this analyzing methodology GSSG. Let us examine one by one.

- The first G is for first generalization. In this stage, one needs to examine if he fully understands the basics about what he is trying to explain to others. This is an important stage in giving your explanation power and persuasion. This forms confidence and clearness on what you hope to talk about. At the same time, one could find points he did not understand. This stage, if successfully completed, is useful for the second step.

- The first S is specialization. In this process, one would study more about his theme, topic, or technology. One could be a specialist on his subject. He needs to raise many questions and find their answers. It is in this process that he would meet and listen to an expert if available. Although it is not mandatory, it is useful to listen to how this person talks, and use his or her speaking style to help prepare your own presentation.

- The second S means more in-depth Specialization. This step is about deepening your understanding. After gaining familiarity with the subject, you can now form your own opinions about that knowledge. After this step, you should be able to discuss the subject with experts, and indeed, you will have become an expert yourself. It is advisable to meet with many authorities on the subject to discuss it with them. Take note of how effectively they talk about their area of expertise.

- Finally, the last G stands for Generalization Recurrence. You need to remember that the members of your audience are not experts. Though they are interested in the field, they are only laymen. You need to remember your own first stage of Generalization. First, you should write your script however you like, but when proofreading, you should carefully eliminate any technical terms and replace them with more general vocabulary, and if you cannot do so, you must give a full explanation of the term. At this stage, you may consider using analogies to help your audience understand you.

You are now ready to present your expertise in a way that is both easily understandable and interesting. Well-trained and truly knowledgeable people always speak in such a way that the general public can easily understand them.

End the Downward Spiral of Emotion and Gain a Successful Mindset

Figure out if you have been entrapped in a downward spiral of emotion. It is very easy to be trapped in a vicious cycle of negative emotions. If a couple have an argument in the morning, their emotions will be set for negativity and affect the whole day. The husband will be resentful towards his wife and remorseful about the subject of their argument. He will regret what happened in the morning. He may not be able to focus on his work. Half of his mind would not be there despite being there physically. He may feel ill whenever his colleagues in his office approach him.

Does this sound familiar? Anyone feeling the way described above has been trapped by the downward spiral of emotion. Once these negative feelings enter the mind, it is almost like taking an elevator straight down to the lower floors. It is necessary to exit the elevator, and take steps to go up. The question here, however, is how one can escape this entrapment.

There is a solution. Remember, and take the following three steps to get out of the downward spiral of emotion.

1. Clear your mind with meditation. If you have some place nearby to take a walk, take a walk by yourself to rethink what happened.

2. Take an analytical viewpoint and try to imagine you are the one who is wrong, instead of your argument counterpart.

3. If you have trouble imagining that you might be the one who is wrong, seek a neutral third-party opinion.

Remember the following points:

- It is always difficult (or almost impossible) to change your argument counterpart simply by arguing.

- Don't hold out any hope that your counterpart will give in the way you wish.

Then what will you do? It seems that the only method is taking the initiative to end your negative emotions, thereby changing the situation to your favor. Just keep in mind that no good results can be obtained by arguing with negative emotions.

Bear in mind that unsuccessful people have a tendency to attribute failures to others. They may say their spouses do not understand them. Their bosses are not cooperative. The timing was not right. They did not receive enough support. The list continues endlessly.

In contrast, all successful people both mention and agree on one point: successful people tend to think that they themselves were responsible for their own results, failures or successes, rather than others.

Mystery to Translate Eight Languages With Zero Language Ability

It was a while ago I learned that Ms. Asako Mizuno, my friend and a respectable translator and expert of languages, published this book. I had been procrastinating on purchasing her book with my worst excuse: being too busy. This is a Japanese book that was published in Japan. Since I live in San Francisco, I thought for a long time about how to get it. Additionally, I thought it would be available in the Kinokuniya Japanese Bookshop in downtown San Francisco, but I did not visit the bookshop for a long time. As soon as I finished reading this book, I regretted that I had not bought it sooner.

This book, based on the author's experience of success, was written to advise translators. I am not a translator, but the book was so well-written that I wish I could use the author's advice. I am sure I would enjoy trying out her ideas, if I could. The author first touches upon the macro view, such as the purpose of the work and how to accomplish it. At the same time, she shows micro details, such as how to set up your word processing software to work for you. This is a book that you'll mark up and write in often.

Directly after the author's biography and background is listed, she discusses how to shorten time spent on translation. She discusses "specification," which helps translators shorten their time, and doesn't waste readers' time by discussing general concepts or definitions. She wastes no words, no time, and no explanation. I can imagine her in a no-nonsense position based on her work. My impression after I had finished about one third of the book was that the author keenly approaches the true nature of work in general.

I will not go into too much detail because I hope readers will read this book. As a person who writes in both Japanese and English, I totally agree with the author's prominent opinions: information is the basis for almost everything, the most important element in translation (any foreign language work) is not linguistic ability, and the most critical component is a person's ability with his or her own language. The author's most useful advice is that one should not forget the ultimate purpose of his or her work, although it is not unusual to forget the purpose for additional works such as setting up a PC or software.

Having said that, the author's advice on how to use PCs and software is outstanding. She was neither bound by the framework of being a translator nor influenced by the presumption of how a PC works. Her keen eyes are always focused on the final goal of completing her work without forgetting the crucial element of how to complete it efficiently.

I strongly recommend this book not only to people who engage in translation or linguistic work, but also to entrepreneurs who operate their own businesses. Her book is valuable to people who want to learn to think outside of the box or change their way of thinking.

Zipangu: The Golden Country

The origins of some countries' names are not clear. For example, before World War II, the Japanese name for China was Shina. While these two names are clearly related, the origin of the name China is not clear. There are many theories why China was called China; a notable one being a corruption of Qin, China's first dynasty. The Chinese name for China is Zhongguo. It sounds similar to China and means center country in Chinese.

Japanese name of Japan is Nihon or Nippon. It means the country of the rising sun. The name comes from an ancient letter sent from the Japanese government to China-the opening words of the letter said this is the letter from the country of the rising sun to the country of sunset. This comes from the relative location of Japan, which is located to the east of China. So how did the English name come about? Many Japanese believe that it came from the book, The Travels of Marco Polo, by Marco Polo, the thirteenth-century merchant who travelled to the Orient. He did not visit Japan, but he mentions in his book there is a country full of gold and silver called Zipangu.

This book caused European adventurers to travel to the Far East to find the land of gold and silver. Later, it resulted in Christopher Columbus' discovery of the Americas in 1492. Japan today is far from the country of gold and silver introduced in Marco Polo's book. Why was Japan seen as a golden utopia by European explorers?

In the eleventh and twelfth century, the Fujiwara clan of the Tohoku district built a golden utopia. The clan was related to aristocrats in the central government in Kyoto. While the clan had a close relationship with Kyoto central government, it maintained its independence due to its distance from Kyoto. Kyoto allowed this independence on the condition the clan remained loyal to the central government.

Hidehira Fujiwara was the head of the clan at the peak of its influence. Taking advantage of gold produced in the region, the clan built a golden Buddhist temple, Chuson-ji. The temple's main hall, called Konjiki-do, was filled with golden decoration. The name means golden hall. People of that time talked about the hall looking like a building in heaven. Clearly, this golden utopia attracted Marco Polo's attention, along with other adventurers later on in the fifteenth century, including Christopher Columbus.

Recently, the Tohoku district was hit by the recent earthquake and tsunami. Fortunately, none of the buildings of this utopia were damaged. The author hopes the Tohoku district quickly recovers from the damage of the earthquake and tsunami and the tourists come back to admire the buildings.

Nuclear Power Plant Damage by Japanese Earthquake

We have been hearing that the damage in the Japanese Nuclear Power Plant Fukushima 1 has not been repaired. On Friday, March 11, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 hit northern Honshu Island, Japan at around 3:00 p.m. local time. A massive tsunami followed and at 7:03 p.m. the first emergency declaration was issued. At 8:50 p.m., an evacuation order was issued for residents within a three-kilometer diameter of the power plant. The first, second, and third reactors automatically stopped operating, and all electricity cut off. They lost cooling function.

On the second and third days, hydrogen explosions occurred in the first and third reactors. Radioactive wastes were released into the environment, and radiation levels in the air, water, and foods registered far above normal. Cooling efforts continued, and radiation levels reduced in the environment in the last week of March. However, total recovery of the damage has not been reported as of April 3, 2011. The damage includes the possibility of a core melt down, the worst considerable situation in a nuclear power reactor accident.

When I heard this news in California, my first thought was that this damage would be fixed in one week or so. I thought that at least a concrete plan and schedule would be developed and released in three to five days. Instead, the additional damages were revealed one after another as time went by. The situation has appeared increasingly worse in the last several weeks. It surprised me. The damage and the accident could not be corrected properly in a few days despite the world-class Japanese technology of nuclear power generation.

Although my opinion on use of atomic power as a source of energy is neutral, I do have a concern due to the destructive nature of the power source. I could not help but think people need to make the right decision in using nuclear energy for an alternative energy source. The stories of damages and accidents reminded me an old Chinese story on nature. It was a tale from Zhuangzi. Even though the legs of crane birds are too long, if you cut them, the birds would not survive. Even though the legs of sparrows are too short, if you lengthened them, they would not function. The long legs for crane birds were to keep them dry while standing in water; the short legs for sparrows are for standing safely on the branches of tall trees.

I hope that the use of nuclear power generation is not an attempt to change unchangeable nature: in other words, an action to shorten the legs of cranes or lengthen the legs of sparrows. Otherwise, I hope they would establish comprehensive counter-measures for this kind of natural disaster.

How to Use Your Eyes

Let us talk about how to use our eyes. You may be puzzled at hearing me say I will teach you how you use your eyes. You would say that you are using your eyes to watch things every day. In martial arts training, the most important, and the very first, thing to learn is how to use the eyes. It may be the first thing and the last thing to learn in any fighting skill. A person skillful at a martial art can easily know if the person he is facing to fight is skillful or not. He learns it from his opponent's use of the eyes.

Let us assume that two Japanese swordsmen are fighting. The skillful person would pay attention first to how his opponent uses his eyes. If his opponent were an experienced fighter, this person's eyes would not move much. The opponent's eyes would be focused on his eyes and would not move, even when he moves his sword. In contrast, the inexperienced person's eyes would follow the motion of his sword as he moves it. If the skillful person found that his opponent's eyes follow his sword's action, it would be easy to win by tricking his opponent.

When I was riding a motorbike, I found that my motorbike was directed in precisely the same direction as my eyes. Riding in the sharp bend of a road with an outside cliff, a rider afraid of falling off the cliff would naturally watch the cliff side. If the rider watched the cliff side, his bike would be directed closer to the cliff side he was watching. In contrast, if the rider is not afraid of the cliff edge and continued watching the direction he is turning; his motorbike would go through the center of the sharp corner and turn smoothly.

Let me bring the story back to the fighting swordsmen. The skillful swordsman could know the next move of his opponent. If his opponent watched his hand first, then his head, his opponent would be thinking to attack his hand first and head second. However, he needed to be careful, noticing his opponent's eye movement. He might be moving his eyes intentionally. If he paid too much attention to his hand and head, he would attack his body side instead of his hand and head. The skillful would be able to judge if his opponent's eye movement is fake or real by watching his eyes.

This would be useful outside of the martial arts realm. One could be careful to ask him a question if he is watching true movement or just the misleading fake action of an opponent's sword. The truth may be hiding behind the visible scene.
