Think Outside of the Box

It has been a while since people started to talk about this. "Think outside of the box." The origin of this saying was somewhat obscure. But it does make sense in the way that we should not think as usual framework of business or people's concept.

When I was working for a company, the situation was quite opposite. People were trained to think "inside of the box" and so was I. From 1990 - 1996, I had been assigned for inhouse business planning and development. Company's brain position, so to speak. Staff was engaged in executive summaries, new proposals, or studying new proposals from other parts of this organization.

In periodic executive meetings, my department was in charge of producing executive summaries. My bosses were constantly concerning what would be the difference from last time summary. They had their own file of all of past summaries and first step for staff making new summaries was to open the last document from Hard Disk Drive folder. No wonder they could not "think outside of the box".

One day, Jack Welch, GE was visiting. He was relatively short, smiling, kind looking person. It was 2nd time I met him and he remembered me from last time and asked my name and courteously received my business card I offered to him. After the lunch, he was speaking for directors. I could observe his speech. When he speaks, his human like attitude was not changed, but his logic were keen and acute.

I cannot cut and past his speech here, but his point was he appreciate people who propose "to change" what they did in past. He said if one is proposing new idea from past experience, Jack Welch will never accept it.

I sometimes overlap that time Jack Welch speech with one scene in the movie "The Matrix". The hero Neo trying to save their leader Mophias decides to attack military building. It looks like suicidal. Neo's partner Trinity tells Neo "Nobody has ever done like this before". Neo answers back "I know that is why it works."

People tends to think that if it is outside of their box that it does not work. People tends to judge things and hypocritical to the people who try to do things outside of the box. And the people trying to do things outside of the box tends to be discouraged by others laugh at them, criticise them, and tell them it does not work. But, it may be a good sign that we are thinking outside of the box if you encounter people's laugh, criticisms, oppositions, and rejections. There will be people who knows value of our thinking outside of the box and agree with us.

Reasons to attract people distract people

It was last night I took part in weekly Skype meeting with my Japanese partners in one part of my business. There are some business issues with them, but in addition, I really did not like taking part in the meeting and skipped several weeks for reasons. I have known them relatively long time, mostly they are friendly. I could not have figured why I have felt not so positive about the meeting for long time.

I finally decided to participate in the meeting. I am not going to go into the details, but I can say the longer the meeting continued, I felt more depressed to the extend that I wanted to get out. But I was lucky to decide to participate, because I could find the reason why I did not like the meeting. Despite the fact that they were talking about "Positive Mindset", "How to improve Skills", and "How to Attract Customers", the words they used were far from "Positive", or almost opposite. For example, one of them said he was unskilled. Another said his skill is insufficient. They used words they are nothing for big customers. Even mentioned himself to be a bug or garbage. One of them used term "Failure" and "Trauma" more than 30 times each in 2 hour meeting.

I did not talk much in the meeting this time. I was thinking about power of words positive or negative. They can greatly affect the people. I wonder if they could say "Improve skills" instead of "Lucking skill"? "Failure" could be "Experience"? "Trauma" could be "Challenge"? Then the entire atmosphere and people's attitude could be different.

Words can influence other people who you are talking with. I would rather be with positive people than negative people in business or private. That was why I did not like the meeting. I was lucky to find that out. Because I will be able to challenge to change them or else.

This morning I could talk with a lady who called me through Skype. I could find and read her blog. In the afternoon a gentleman from same group she and I belong answered back to me in no time to my email question. Today was far better day than yesterday thanks to these friends.

Quite recently I established some business check points which I hope to share with you, today.

Life is Full of Continuous Imperfect Actions

Today, I introduce one Japanese Modern Art Painter, Seison Maeda. He portrayed many historical Japanese worriers, including first Shogun, Yoritomo Minamoto. He is famous for precise painting of colorful Japanese worrier armor.

Even among Japanese who do not know his name, if I show his artworks, masterpieces, they would immediately recognize his artworks. He introduced Western style water painting skills into traditional Japanese method.

He was awarded so many times including the award directly from Japanese Emperor in his life time. It was not usual for Japanese painters. In 1967, age 82, he orchestrated repairing fire lost Buddhism National Treasure Paintings and Arts in Horyu-ji Temple, which is the oldest Japanese Buddhism Temples, and World Heritage.

In his later days, his legs were failing and he needed wheelchair to move around. But he said his arms were not failing. So, he continue to paint as long as his arms are okay.

In his interview in TV program, asked how he felt about his own artworks, he said he felt making a lot of failures, mistakes, and regrets. He could not help continuing to think he should have done this should not have done that... When the interviewer asked which is his perfect masterpiece he liked, he replied "nothing". He said everything he painted were imperfect. At last he smiled and told to the interviewer "I do not look back past. No matter how bad was critics evaluation, past works are past. I continue to think next."

It looks like continuous Imperfect Action made him #1 Japanese Water Painting in the history of Japanese modern art.

Spirits in Recession

IMF announced their expectation of world economy of 2009 to be largely negative. They say it would be worst year after the world war II in some countries. Management in recession is inevitable for any company owners. This IMF news reminded me of a one person. Konosuke Matsushita was the founder and president of "Panasonic". He has been well respected as one of most successful Japanese business person. People call him "God of Management" in Japan.

Due to his fathers situation, Konosuke could not finish even elementary school. He brushed up his own business and studied technical knowledge all by himself through his experience being used by so many rich people. He invented attachable and detachable light valve socket. He is also one of most innovative person in Japanese history of science and technology.

It is impossible to talk about him in one article. Brief background introduction took up maybe more than half of this article already. So, let me get into the story I hoped to share today. Panasonic has been and still is believed to be strong against bad economy. It was said that it is due to their management following Konosuke Matsushita's spirit.

In one of the recession time, he introduced working condition very close to work-sharing, today and did not fire any of his employee. In the new year day in bad economy, he gathered all employees to join shipment of company back orders and asked them to enjoy new year with buyers. In the company foundation day ceremony, he asked all - literally all - employees participated to go up to podium and express themselves. He told to everybody that that day is the day he listen to all of his employees. Hesitated first, after the first one finished speaking, all employee expressed themselves.

In press interview, he said that it must be high spirited in this kind of time.

Slump Sumo Grand Champion Took "Imperfect Action" Won the Season

"Asa-Sho-Ryu" is name of this Sumo (Japanese Style Wrestling) Grand Champion. His name means "Morning Blue Dragon". He is one of historical Grand Champ who has won 22 seasons in total. His record was 5th greatest in modern Sumo history.

He, being once almost unbeatable, started to have a problem 4-5 seasons ago. He was almost mentally sick. He damaged his elbow 4 seasons ago and decided not to participate in his next season.

His elbow damage was worse than everybody thought. It was not just one season he could not take part in. He could not have fought for next 3 seasons. Fans started to think that Asa-Sho-Ryu might not be able to fight this season, as well. Related people and the press started to talk out loud that he was thinking retiring. His condition did not look good and due to his condition, he could not train himself well, at least to his own satisfaction.

This season started January 11. It was announced Grand Champ Asa-Sho-Ryu fights. His 1st - 2nd fights were not so good. But he could manage to win. As season goes into later part, the Grand Camp started to smoothly win as was in peak condition. He was getting stronger and stronger day by day.

He continued to win until the last day. 14 continuous wins. He needed to defeat his rival "Haku-Ho (White Phoenix)" the other Grand Camp in the last day, January 25. Haku-Ho marked 13 wins in this season coming to this last day.

All Sumo fans were so excited. Regardless "Asa-Sho-Ryu" fans or "Haku-Ho" fans were looking forward to their fight. Sumo Colosseum in Tokyo were full. Asa-Sho-Ryu lost the first fight against "Haku-Ho" on the last day. Both becoming 14 wins, they fought 2nd. "Asa-Sho-Ryu" won!!! He is now Champion of New Year Season of 2009.

Being asked in the winning interview, Asa-Sho-Ryu answered that his conditions were totally IMPERFECT, but he is glad that he decided to fight.

I thought a moment what if he decided not to take action to participate because his conditions were IMPERFECT. Taking Imperfect Action paid off for Grand Camp Asa-Sho-Ryu for this season. He, infamous being poker-faced, looked very happy declaring revival of strong "Asa-Sho-Ryu".

What is the nature of confidence and how to build it?

This morning I was thinking about the nature of "Confidence". More than 50 - 60% (maybe more) of procrastination and failure of taking action come from lack of "Confidence".

I kept thinking about it for almost whole day, today. Miraculously and mysteriously, when one thinks about something seriously, he comes across the answer. In the evening, I was watching Japanese TV Program introducing "Professional of Fish Wholesaler", who is buying Tuna in fisherman's market and selling to Sushi restaurants in Japan.

Last November, due to weather, storms, unusual temperature, he could not buy any Tuna, which can satisfy his professional eyes, from market. His shop had not had Tuna for about a week. Tuna plays important role in Sushi in Japan year end, so customers were nervous. His loss was estimated to be $20,000. But this guy did not compromise. He was confident and determined. Despite the fact that there are so many other wholesalers who the restaurants buyers can buy Tuna from, his customer restaurant buyers did not buy from others and decided to wait.

Now I started to pay full attention to the TV program, because I wondered why this wholesaler is so confident about his professionalism and the fact that his customers did not leave him. His customer explained that his Tuna is always good and this customer knows that if he does not buy from this professional wholesaler, his Sushi taste will be different, bad, and aggravated. This buyer said that he has been helpful to keep maintain the level of their Sushi, and they are thankful to him.

This may not be full answer to my original question, "what is the nature of confidence and how to build it?". But people keep doing business with the people who are helpful. Customers do not change as long as they are thankful for doing business with us.

Quality Seminar You Want to Attend -3

OK, here is contents of Seminar. The Seminar consists of the followings:
- Personal Branding
- Niche Marketing
- Blogging
- Social Network Marketing
- Article Marketing
- List Building
- Effective Closing and Follow up
- How to Monetize

Overall, the seminar was full of information and know-how on Internet Business, how to use these tools and sites. As I mentioned in previous Article "Quality Seminar You Want to Attend" 100 % participation and interactive style. I mean all the participants have different enthusiasm, personal interest, and personal goals. They are expressed and well respected. Not just lecturers but also all participants gave suggestions how to find, put into words, and slogan them.

Then, all of us are suggested to be "EXPERT" of our OWN BRAND. Or it can be said that Craig and Giovanna led us, or helped us to find that we ARE already EXPERT of our OWN BRAND.

All participants stood up to explain what is their BRAND, what is it, and how you promote them. All participants commented and helped them on how we can promote them. People stood up in front of Video Camera and express themselves effectively. Roll plays in talking with people over phone and how to deal with peoples' objections.

Amazing was the fact that neither Craig nor Giovanna, hosts of this seminar, strongly pushed people to participate. Instead, they taught all members it was so important that we participated. So all voluntarily participate, roll play, stood up to explain our own enthusiasm, stood in front of video. In my 50+ years of life, I never have taken part in something like this. I swear.

Craig and Giovanna definitely helped me to crack my own cell and do what I need to do.

"This seminar changed my sensibility. Whatever I watch, touch, and feel inspire me for motivation."

Quality Seminar You Want to Attend -2

Before I start to explain the contents of seminar in my blog, I want to talk with the hosts and owner of this seminar about "do's and don'ts". The contents of seminar belongs to my friends, Craig and Giovanna Garcia, EDC Diamond. So, please wait for the details of the seminar. When I upload the article of the details, that is the one you want to read. Today, I hoped to share with some pictures which I take in the seminar.

First picture is the book. This is a collaborative book by multiple authors who are successful business people, centered on Erica Combs. Great topics about inspiring the people's motivation. This was the greatest book I got in past 10 years. My friend, co-author of this book, the host of this time seminar, Craig Garcia kindly singed and gave me message. Here is the 2nd picture and Craig's message to me.

Craig for me is more than my Internet Business system owner and seminar host. He is caring and comforting friend and mentor. He is very approachable and friendly. Putting business aside, if you contact me to introduce him to you, I can do that. He is totally different from so-called "Internet Marketing Guru". When I had a problem in this system he and his wife Giovanna helped me out of the problems. If I did not meet them, I would not be writing this blog article.

Following pictures are the ones I took in the seminar.

Craig and I when Craig was signing the book (Left).
With Giovanna, (Right)
Giovanna is the
Co-owner of EDC Diamond, co-host of this seminar. Giovanna inspired me on taking "Imperfect Action " to move ahead. She is CEO of "Imperfct Action.com" with a lot of inspiring blogs. Great blogger, excellent trainer, good wife, good mother, and my friend. Giovanna's blog was picked up by "Alltop". Congratulations, Gio! I provided the link here to click.

Craig, Giovanna, and me. They are very friendly and approachable. Of course sharp and helpful for Internet Business Owners like myself.

I wrote an article before "Are You Comfortable?". I am 1100% comfortable with them. I am sure they give you the same comfort to you, too.

Here is another seminar picture (Bottom Right). I did not feel sleepy even in 1 second for full 2 days. Nobody sleeps, no even boring time. I am sleepy now due to lack of sleep for last 3 days including driving.

Quality Seminar You Want to Attend

I am here in San Diego to attend a seminar to teach how to orchestrate your Internet Business. The seminar is unique that was 100% hands on, participation style, blogging, branding, brain storming. Participants were speaking almost equally to the speakers were lecturing.

I needed to drive 9 hours from San Francisco to San Diego taking my relaxed time, but I am happy to participate and glad that I drove down to attend the meeting.

It was not only the contents of seminar, the quality of members who attended the seminar were awesome. I enjoyed chatting, exchanging views and opinions in break time, lunch time, and after the seminar networking with the people who joined the seminar. I will go into the details in my postings tomorrow. But if you want to spend QUALITY of time, this is the type of seminar you want to attend. You have been to some seminar before for sure, but how many seminar you remember that you need to stand up and express yourself what you need, what you worry, and what you need to address from then on.

How many seminars did you attend, which tried to sell you more, throw information at you and do not care how and when you will use them. This was different and excellent.

As I said I will go more details in my posting later on. You will love it.

What is anxiety?

In many different cultures and histories, warriors and knights closely related to religious people. In Europe, China, India, Japan, etc... whenever or wherever strong heroes or leaders were, there were spiritual mentors, who are mostly religious people.

15th century in Japan was totally political chaos. There are so many local lords tried to become the king of Japan. There were wars, fights, plots, betrayals for more than 100 years. There was a local lord who once was brave and fearless. One day he found himself fearful to fight. He could no long maintain stability of his mind. He went to the Buddhism Priest who was a mentor for him.

"My teacher, I am having anxiety attacks. I am fearful and I can no longer fight. Do you know any way how you can get rid of my anxiety?" The lord asked. Then the priest said to him.
"My son, I definitely can get rid of your anxiety. First I want to take a look at it. Please take your anxiety out here and show me."
The lord frowned. "Sir, the anxiety is the status of mind which cannot be seen, cannot be taken out, cannot be shown."
"That's right, my boy. Your anxiety is just in your mind. It was what your own mind created. Are you afraid of your own mind?"

The lord understood his teachers point. He could recover and manage his own anxiety from then on.

Japanese American and I -2

When I decided to keep staying in US and declared so in 2001, there are a lot of problems and frictions in my family. I remember some family members accused me yelling at me "You are abandoning your own mother country and family". I can imagine for the people immigrated to overseas must have had same kind of experience. But, they decided to emigrate based on government policy, this kind of blame may be out of mark.

Japanese Government, despite the promoting this policy, was very irresponsible it seems. In 1980's when Japanese enterprises are building their factories and offices in foreign countries including US, did not hire Japanese Overseas much, in spite of Japanese Overseas People's strong hope, desire, and expectation.

Japanese Americans in WWII time needed to prove themselves to be Americans, needed to give up their original language and expose themselves to fierce European battle field. My wife is a Chinese American born in China. Comparing Chinese Community and Japanese Community in US, I see a clear difference. For example, Japan Town, San Francisco, is a historical monument. No Japanese American Living can be felt. Chinatown, instead, has a lot of living activities. 2nd Floor of Souvenir Shops is their living space, I can hear babies crying, husband and wife are shouting something. After more than 60 years since end of World War II, the War is still affecting peoples lives all over the world.

There were time when Japanese Companies hiring Japanese Overseas inviting them from Brazil, etc... Because younger generations population is decreasing in Japan, it is only way to expand their business in Japan. The situation changed last year. Due to the bad economy today. They are now firing them, according to Japanese TV News Program. I cannot help talking to myself what a country. What a companies. So selfish.

I am starting to believe that now is the time that Japanese Overseas - Japanese should strengthen their ties and try to cooperate, coordinate, help each other, so that no external environment including government, countries, companies can hurt us any more.

Japanese-Japanese people should learn more about Japanese Americans, Japanese Brazilians, Japanese Overseas. The followings are the same site and blog I showed in part-1, but for Japanese people to learn about Japanese Americans, these are very good sites:
http://www.densho.org/
http://blog.densho.org/

Also, there are Japanese site introducing the history of Japanese Americans, for your reference:

I also hope that this article and information will help world people to understand Japanese and our history a little more than knowing Japanese as "Economic Animal", "Japan as #1" or "WWII enemy", or "Quality Products", or "Toyota", or "Sony" (LOL).

Japanese Americans and I -1

It was February in 2005. I was standing outside of Shen Yang Airport, Liao Nin Province, China. I was taking a flight to Tokyo, Japan in 2 hours. It was just right after Chinese Moon Calendar New Year and outside was freezing cold. But, I cannot stop watching the outside wide, huge, and vast landscape spreading in front of me. It was nothing spectacular, but just flat, wide, and vast. I was thinking to myself that "I can understand the feeling of many Japanese in past felt coming to China and never gone back to Japan."

The history of modern time Japanese emigration brings us back to 1885. Japanese continuously emigrated to several countries. Brazil, US, China, Thailand, etc... until WWII slowed everything. Now, I myself being a "Japanese living outside of Japan', the history of Japanese Overseas has kept interested me. A friend I met 30 some years ago started me to think about it. His name is Paul Nakamura. He was an English Teacher in Tokyo. He looked like a Japanese, but he acted slightly different from Japanese, and he could not speak Japanese other than simple conversation. He was a Japanese American born in California. 3-sei (3rd Generation).

He and I get along together. I attended his lessons, lunch together, dinner and drink together. One time, I asked him if he had not been interested in learning Japanese. He told me that his parents did not want him to learn Japanese. He further told me that his father was constantly nervous and his mother was always angry. And they were always against him and stopped him whenever he showed interest in Japanese stuff. But, he could not stop himself being attracted by Japanese culture and needed to come to Japan and see it and feel it.

Since I met Paul, I started to think about Japanese Overseas. Because I was also the one who is majorly interested in living outside of Japan. I started to live in San Francisco, 1997. My previous employee sent me here as a part of stationed Japanese management team. I came across the Tanforan Shopping Mall's Picture posting above, July, 2008. It was showing Japanese Americans' history in War time. I talked with Japanese American Society and posted the following Japanese Article. "Another Pacific War - Record on Tanforan Japanese Camp".

http://golog.nifty.com/cs/catalog/golog_article/catalog_002300_1.htm?page=1

The following is one of the pictures I was allowed to use from NJAH (National Japanese American Historical Society). There are a lot of pictures but this picture was kept in backside of my eyes for long time. I even feel that this picture keep shouting out loud.

After the article was posted, I did not do anything particular on this subject. On New Year Day, this year, I was watching Japanese TV Program and came across a program about Japanese Americans, and found about the following 2 sites.

http://www.densho.org/
http://blog.densho.org/

I talked with the site management, and showing the above URL and link with their consent.

These are very good website and blog including Japanese Americans' testimonies taken in video. They are great source of historical information.

In taking a look at the testimonies in video clip in these sites and information given from NJAH, I was thinking the relationship between Japanese Americans (Japanese Overseas), Japan, Japanese Japanese, and I.

I did not like this article to be too long. So, I will write my thinking in the next article.

PS: I hope that this article and information will help world people to understand Japanese and our history a little more than knowing Japanese as "Economic Animal", "Japan as #1" or "WWII enemy", or "Quality Products", or "Toyota", or "Sony" (LOL).

5 Market Elements 2

It took me long time to realize that Business is a course of action helping others. In a way I learned Business ABC, they told me "Business consists of 3 elements. People, Products, Money." And "People" is always the top of these elements or any other factors in business.

Business or selling can be a mechanism or ruled game. But who makes this mechanism moving? Who participate in the game. PEOPLE. In my foregoing article, "5 Market Element", I mentioned that these 3 elements are getting to be 5 in present and updated business management. I used the following illustration.

It was my own illustration. But I was thinking about this illustration since I felt a little uncomfortable in the way it was written. I took my software and wrote a bunch of illustrations.

I finally settled with the following illustration:

The Idea was that People being the center of entire operation managing "Information" and "Brand", therefore create flow of "Products" and "Money".

The difference is "People" is not sitting on the top of 4 other elements, but accessing and utilizing all of them. In my new illustration, "People" is not necessarily the master. But they are the center of all the elements.

Instead of "People" are equally positioned in legacy 3 elements model, in the new model, "People" is the center and access all other elements.

I have an opinion that in the change era, "People" element increases its value and importance.

Fill the Missing Link - Website M&A -

One of my business lines is "Website M&A". Please also refer to my company website, "http://zhenintl.ws/", Section of "Web-based Business".

Typical example of this M&A, Merger and Acquisition, is Google bought out YouTube. Google wanted Video Site business and bought out YouTube. YouTube became a part of Google and Google acquired YouTube's members, patrons, and largest Video uploading site in the world.

M&A is conducted for many different reasons, such as shutting up competitions, white knight (save) troubled companies, acquire technology overnight, etc... But, for me it is a perfect example of "Fill the Missing Link". If you are good at manufacturing and I am good at selling, if we merge together and partner in a business is very good matching.

My Japanese Partner and I are now working on 5 projects. One in Europe, 2 in China, and the other 2 are India projects.

I would love to have a US project.

If you are interested in buying, selling, partnering, JV, funding your existing business or future business, or you know someone who is interested in those, please let me know. My partner and I will find the best partner for you.

Changes

How many of you know that "Toyota" started its company as a automatic loom manufacturer.

Did you know that "Kanebo", now the cosmetics company also was a yarn spinning mill factory in textile industry?

GE started as light valve company. IBM was a typewriter company.

Almost forgot that Honda was a motor-bike company whose history manufacturing automobiles are relatively young.

President-elect Barak Obama started his slogan "Change". Change is good for improvement, challenges to achieve higher level of life stage. In addition, change is the absolute necessity to survive like above great companies survived by changing. Insect grows by changing. Frogs and other amphibians change their shapes in growing. Metamorphosis is a part of lives.

I hope the year 2009 is the year for "Change". Good Change, I mean.
