Chain Reaction - 5

In the Steven Spielberg film and the story of Michael Crichton, "Jurassic Park", the bio-engineering company, "InGen" produced just females of dinosaurs, so that they could not reproduce themselves.  Later they found that they are breeding themselves.  Why was it? How did that happen?
Among amphibian and reptile , there are kinds whose gender could be changed in case there were only one side of gender, not enough the other gender.  Nobody knows dinosaurs were that kind, but in the story, they changed their genders to survive and breed themselves.  InGen tried to limit the number and control their breeding and they believed that they could do that.  But the nature was more powerful than they thought it was.

It seems to me this is more ripple effect than chain reaction.  You throw a stone to a pound and the water develops rings go wider on the surface of the water centered on the spot where the stone landed.  If there were a bug on the direction of the ripple develops, the shape of the ripple would not be the one which we could expect.

Modern science realize this to be "Chaos Theory" to explain why unexpected could happen in the real world.  My friend Mr. Katsuno, Hideki posted good explanation in his comment in my previous post, Chain Reaction - 3.    Please refer to it, as well.

Chain Reaction - 4

In addition to what I concluded in previous post, I hoped to comment on what is the best and the worst in dealing with Chain Reaction happening to our lives.  Starting from the worst, the worst would be you kept driven crazy.  It just eating up your time and effort and you do not have any progress over the situation.  It will not only drive you crazy, but also try to grab you to drew into the deeper water to drawn you.

The best is as I mentioned in previous post you leave it alone and continue to do what you can do best.  You do not have to be doing perfectly right things.  You simply continue to do you believe to be the best.  You continue to do this for a certain amount of time, you will notice that your actions started to even change the bad Chain Reaction to be the favorable one for you.

Coming back to the rain for the traveler, you may find rain to be good sign to get rested earlier than you scheduled for your longer way to go the day after.  You will find the rain is not so bad after all.

Chain Reaction - 3

The other expression I remembered when I started thinking about this "Chain Reaction" was a old Japanese poem:

"Isogazuba Nurezaramajio Musashino-no, Atokara Hareru Musashino-no Ame".

It means "Oh poor traveler, he would not have been wet, if he did not hasten.  The rain is over after he is gone in Musashino (Old Name of Tokyo Area)."

We experience this kind of things a lot in our real lives.  This was why our lives could be full of "could have", "would have", and "should have".  It seems to be inevitable feeling that way as long as we live.

Also it appears that Chain Reaction is not a thing which a human beings like you and I can control over. Some times this fact drives us crazy.  It goes without saying that butterfly wings vibration in Amazon could cause tornadoes in Nevada, AZ.  Simple and small go ahead or refusal could cause major loss for your business.

There is a quite clear and relatively irresponsible but most effective solution to this Chain Reaction happening to your life and drives you crazy.

Do you want to know what it is?  "Leave it alone".  It is an Act of God.  You have no power to control.  If this thing happening to your life anyway and if you do not have any control over it.  It is simply waste of time and effort to even think about it.  It is far better to think and take actions over things which you can affect, change, and control over.

Chain Reaction - 2

In last post, I mentioned about this Japanese saying "Kaze ga Fuku to Okeya ga Mokaru".  I double checked the English translation and found that the following is the widely used translation:

"After wind's blowing, basin-smiths get money."

For the people who are frowning to this expression, I would like to explain a little bit about this.  This is pseudo-logical explanation how the things happen.  There are several different explanation even in Japan.  Most typical is:

When wind is blowing, air gets dusty.  Dust will get into people's eyes and it will cause people problem with their eyes.  The people who lost their sight will become players Japanese string instrument which uses cats skin.  (There were traditional blind musicians in Japan who play instruments.)  The more cats will be killed and number of mouse increases.  Mice bite basins and damage them.  Basins owners need to repair or replace basins.  That's why basin-smiths make money.

The other one is:

When wind is blowing, it will cause more fire.  Fire damage houses, especially basins are all wood made, they are burned down. The house owners need to repair or replace basins.  Or the people escaped from house burned down need take a bath outside evacuation.  They need to build outside bath basin.  That is how basin-smiths make money.

Obviously this is a kind of joke.  Most of people would never believe this is logical.  But, in real world, things are happening almost more peculiar than this.

Chain Reaction - 1

Last weekend, I was just out in our back yard and enjoying sun bathing.  I have not had that kind of relaxed feeling for years.  I was thinking a lot of things that happened to me in past 5 - 10 years.  Many happy memories, some sad, some bitter memories I had in relation to that day when I was enjoying the sun.

I was also thinking about series of occurrences which could have never occured if the one previous occurrence was different.

In Japan, there are short story whereas they say "Oke-ya (Barrel Craftsmen) make money if strong wind".  It was story about half-joking "Chain Reaction" inconsiderable could happen by sequence.  But that day last weekend, I could not help thinking that unimaginable things are are really happening in the way of "Chain Reaction".

For example, if we did not move from Burlingame apartment to San Mateo House, rent, we would not have thought about keeping a dog.  If we did not take our dog, Xue Er, we would not have been asked to move out from the house rent in San Mateo.  If we did not move from the house, we would never have bought our house.

People may think they are nice surprises and happenings were all coincidental.  But, these days I have a little bit different opinion.  You may agree or disagree what I think or feel, but I would like to share my thinking with you in coming several postings.

Pacific War and Japanese - 8

In this last article of this book review series, "Eternal Zero", I wanted to express my views and opinions on the subjects this book is talking about.  Lieutenant Miyabe was the one who spoke for the Japanese Tokko pilots and soldiers who were killed in World War II in their real feeling from the bottom of their hearts.  Since Japan lost the war, they were destined to be disregarded and forgotten.  Japanese people after the war determined that they should forget about the war and restart from the beginning.

The approach was not all bad in one sense for it motivated industrial growth.  However, the soldiers who fought for their own country, and once were heroes for their country, were no longer heroes.  Instead, they were treated almost like criminals from their own society.  They were hated, disliked, and disregarded for long time.  More than 60 years have passed since the war.  I personally believe that it is about the time they were remembered and re-evaluated by the world.  I believe they should not be treated as heroes.  But I believe at the same time they should not be forgotten or ignored.  They lived their own lives.

After I finished reading this book, I remembered the Clint Eastwood movies "The Flag of Our Fathers" and "A Letter from Iwo Jima". They were excellent movies learning what happened both side of the war, East Pacific and West Pacific, also won and lost.  I think it was Clint Eastwood himself stating in the movie "I want to know how they (Japanese Soldiers) lived and died."

The story of "Eternal Zero" ends when his grand daughter and son found out the secret that Kyuzo Miyabe lived and died for his own family.

I plan to check if they have English translation of this book.  If I found it, I will write again here.  This is the book which I wanted all American people read.

Pacific War and Japanese - 7

The one of his fighting mate, later became a gangster was assigned for protection of Tokko Squadron.  He found Kyuzo Miyabe in the Tokko team which he was supposed to protect.  Since he had known Lieutenant Miyabe tried to survive by his all means, he thought why and why he volunteered to be the suicide bombing?

When asked, Lieutenant Miyabe smiled and told him that he will be well protected if he guard Miyabe to conduct Tokko.  Miyabe did not give him direct answer.  In its entire story, the reason is not very clear.  This is the part you need to use your imagination why he selected the way of suicide bombing.  My interpretation is that he could not continue to see his friends dying from the attack, especially the one he saved before became Tokko.  Miyabe wanted to save him by all means.

Japanese Navy strategy that time killed too many Japanese.  It is why even today there are so many people who hate wars and military actions.  Japanese Tokko annoyed and frightened enemy forces, but the actuality was they killed more young Japanese soldiers and pilots than enemy soldiers.  How bad!!!

When Miyabe did Tokko and died, he used all of his skills he had.  He continued to fly almost the surface of the Pacific Ocean so that he would not be detected by enemy raider.  When he flew up for attack, he used to drift his Zero Fighter so that it was not easy to be shot.  He bombed the target.  But the bottle ship did not sink.  When the American Captain of the bottle ship found his body in his ship, he gave Miyabe military funeral, despite that he lost his son in the war against Japan earlier.

The story ends coming back to an American soldier's statement.  "I have never seen Fighter Plane flied and moved like that.  I believe the fighter plane was flew by a devil.  It was not human skill at all."

Pacific War and Japanese - 6

If my father were alive and read this story, I know what he would have said.  It is impossible to live like lieutenant Miyabe in Japanese Navy that time.  I understood that "Tokko" was voluntary in its surface, it was almost mandatory for the Navy Pilots .  If a Japanese Fighter Pilot would have tried to act or say like Miyabe in this book, he was put on martial court and sent back for punishment almost immediately.  He would have been lucky if he was jailed.  He could be sentenced to death that time.

So, Kyuzo Miyabe is a person living only in the author's creativity.  He is not historical at all.  However, I feel that Miyabe represent all the Tokko pilots real feeling and truth in their mind when they "volunteered" for suicide bombing.  They wanted to live for sure.  They wanted to go back to their wife, their children, their parents.

Survivors in Tokko once told in Japanese TV Program on war that when they suicide attack enemy battle ship, what they usually come to mind was about their mother, their family, not Emperor at all.  Japanese Tokko frightened US navy in its history.  But the soldiers and pilots are also same human beings, somebody's husbands, fathers, sons who hoped to have more peaceful lives and livings with their family.

I am sure there was no Lieutenant Miyabe in Japanese Navy, but I am also sure that he was the one every and all the Japanese pilots and soldiers that time hoped to be and wanted to be.

Retired business person in this book who was saved and respected Lieutenant Miyabe told his grandson "Japanese Tokko could be called "Suicide Attack".  And it was.  But it was never exercised against civilian people".
