What is Jail Island, Alcatraz? -7

Attempts to escape from Alcatraz were on going. Official record is "34 Escape Attempts, 7 killed, 2 drowned, 5 missing, 20 arrested". Included in the missing were "Frank Morris" and Anglin brothers as shown the movie "Escape from Alcatraz". Frank Morris was sent to Alcatraz in 1960. He planned and attempted prison break in 1962 with John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Allen West. They built raft and their own dolls, continued to dig to escape for 2 years. They executed their plan June 11, 1962. Allen West could not join the escape.

FBI started search immediately, but they could not find them. They could not find their bodies as well. All they found were a part of their raft, bags of Anglins, etc... FBI and Alcatraz authority decided that they were drowned and died. But government decided to close Alcatraz Prison about 1 year after this escape.

Picture uploaded here are above left "Frank Morris, John and Clarence Anglin (Left to Right), and their dolls" and "Original Federal Signboard showing what Alcatraz is".

Hi Hilary,

It is very interesting that this jail island is world famous like guided book is sold in your neighbour and we are living close to it. Lucky we are not living in the island. (LOL)

Thank you for your comment.

Hi Shaw,

This is a very interesting aspect of the prisoners of Alcatraz! They were apparently very creative in their plan and execution!

Apparently, they would rather try and fail...possibly be killed...rather than continue that existence at the prison.

It says something about the human spirit!

Best Regards

Hello Pete,

Your comment touches upon good point. It was obviously worse than being killed continuing to be in prison. It is understandable to some extend.

Thank you for your comment.

Shaw, thank you for this great post. It is very difficult for them. They are told when to get up, when to eat, when to exercise, when to work, and when to go to bed. Now with the gangs always having to watch your own back. It would not be fun to me. Some prisons are better than others. Some are the worst. Some are like country clubs (but you can not leave.) Alcatraz was one of the worst. To them death might be welcomed over staying their.

Dear Dan and Deanna,

Freedom is like air we do not think much in daily lives. It was taken for granted. It is almost unthinkable if we live without freedom. The prisoners did. They did not have any freedom. It must be unbelievably harsh.

Thank you for your comment.

Everyone knows what Alcatraz was. It's one of the most famous spots in San Francisco, visited by tourists every year. there are so many stories connected to Alcatraz that they give a misterious touch to this place.
