Also, their children were attending schools in San Francisco across the bay. They were taking ferries every morning and evening to attend their schools. In comparison with inmates, their lives might not have been so bad, I thought. However, my blog friend told me that lives of officers in prisons and jails are not easy. It could be as bad as prisoners. They need to be tensed 24/7. If something happens, they need to fight to their lives. Prisoners are not nice to them. They must be tough to inmates. The jail island made lives of all related people tough, it looks like.
Island being independent from outer society, equipped with many functions. They had their own fire fighting unit. The picture left is the fire truck preserved in the island.

Hi Shaw,
You bring up so many interesting aspects to Jail Island! It has such an infamous history!
I agree the people that worked at the prison were in jeopardy since there were some very bad people in the jail.

Hi Shaw .. interesting aspects of jail life .. I think being a prison warder at any prison must be pretty soul destroying .. all that negative.
Now stuck on an island however beautiful the view .. must be prison enough .. even if you could get off occasionally ..
Not my scene!! thanks for the tour though ..

Hello Pete,
I think this kind of work drives people crazy. It is not easy to deal with prisoners every day obviously.
I hope I did not betray your expectation in this series of "Alcatraz".
Thank you for your comment.

Shaw, that would be a concern for the officers and warden to have their wives and children that close if something were to happen. They might be in harms way. Did anything happen, like a riot, it would be nice to know.

Dear Hilary,
I agree that it is not favorable place. It is the last place we wanted to be. Most of us will not be there, anyways. But, that's why it interests us.
Thank you for your comment.

Hello Dan and Deanna,
There was a riot when they were playing baseball in the ground. It is harsh environment for anyone to live. I will write about the riot some other time.
Thank you for your comment.

Hello Shaw,
Regarding your comments! I enjoyed the post tremendously! I personally don't think I would want to meet any of these prisoners.
I visited a prison on a tour when I was in high school. The prisoners keep looking at us like they were caged animals...never forgot that!
Best Regards

Hello Pete,
Thank you for your coming back for my comment. I am glad that you enjoyed them.
It must have been quite an experience visiting jail when you are a high school boy. Beyond imagination.
Thanks again.
